Discover the Activities
As in the past, the central meeting place of the Borgo is still the Piazza . The terraces close to our olive trees have become ideal places to spend moments of relaxation and conviviality. The house of the Village Chief "Bellincione" has now been adapted with common living-rooms, a lounge bar and a wonderful orangerie where you can read a book or listen to the ecos of nature. The upstairs floor has become a wonderful dining area with a renewed fireplace, that dates back to the 1500’s hundred.
THE RELAIS
Borgo Vescine is perched on the top of a verdant hill, 600 meters above the sea level, and overlooks the historic town of Radda in Chianti. The view gets lost in an expanse of olive trees and vineyards.
The Story
Borgo Vescine, at first, was conceived as a lookout post during the Longobard reign (7th to 9th century). Its purpose was to control the surrounding territory which included the important towns of Radda and Castellina in Chianti. Towards the end of the 8th century the area became a free domain. During this time the inhabitants decided to construct multiple large walls and a second tower. The remains of these towers are partly visible in the Borgo as part of the structure that makes many of our rooms.
Towards the end of 1000 a.C. the Marquise Ugo, founder of the Marquisate of Tuscany, made a lavish donation to the Poggibonsi Monastery. This and many other donations where also made to many plots of land between Radda in Chianti and Castellina and some of them affected positevly the raise of the Borgo.
Throughout the centuries, the Borgo, faced many different inhabitants. First the monks that where the ones to who started to cultivate and plant the first vine and olive trees.
Later on the little fortress grew with a few local inhabitants and became a fully functional village, with families working the surrounding land.
During this time the villagers build the stone dry walls for cultivation, that as of today, are recognised by Unesco as world heritage.
